There are many more Japanese fabrics than just the traditional hand-crafted type. Japan produces a wide variety of materials, using high-tech methods that have utterly captivated brand designers from all around the world. But even when cutting-edge technologies are used to produce pieces of incomparable quality still requires the finishing touches to be done by hand. So we decided to visit various production facilities to explore the theme of “Hand & Technology.”Different factory locations procure the raw materials, produce and dye the threads, prepare the warp, weave the fabric, give it texture, and rigorously inspect the quality. The steps are many, and each one requires great professional skill. In the course of this work, artisans build the mutual trust that makes the complex division of labour possible. Behind the production of superior fabrics is a marvellous harmony of human skill and machine technology. Fabrics that start out as a single strand of fibre end up playing an important role in fashion, interior design, architecture, and many other fields. Indeed, the world truly does appreciate a well-made Japanese fabric.

日本の布は、伝統工芸を支える手仕事だけではなく、国内外ブランドのデザイナーをとりこにするハイテク技術まで、そのバリエーションは幅広く奥行きがあります。最先端のテクノロジーを使いながらも、最後は人の手による仕上げがほどこされ、他に類を見ない完成度に到達しているものもあります。 今回私たちは、「ハンド＆テクノロジー」をテーマに、生産の現場を訪ねました。それぞれの産地は、原料を準備する、糸をつくり染める、経糸（たていと）を整える、布を織る、風合いを加える、厳しく検査する・・・と、あらゆる工程において専門化が進み、相互の信頼関係により高度に分業化されています。優れた布を創り出す背景には、人の手と機械技術とが見事に調和していました。もともとは一本の繊維が、ファッション、インテリア、建築など、さまざまな分野で重要な役割を果たす布となり、それらは世界で高い評価を得ています。Found MUJIでは、産地をひとつひとつ巡り、地域と繋がり、地域と交流することで、新しい創造の道を探ってゆきたいと考えています。
